BACK IN HIS RECLINER, HE waited for Erin to return from the bathroom. She had tried to blow her nose quietly, but Ben heard. She sounded miserable. He had to draw in a deep breath to calm the rage in his gut.

He wanted to help, but just how should he proceed? How could he be any help to Erin on this night? He had no idea what to say, or even if he should say anything. He simply sat quietly, slightly rocking in the big chair, and he waited.

His first thought was a selfish one. That concerned him. But he couldn't shake it. Maybe he should just lay the question out and see what happened. "Erin?" he said softly, and then he paused, deciding just how to word such a selfish question. He decided to just blurt it out. "Does Chris hate me?"

Erin's eyes bulged.

Ben smiled in spite of himself.

"No, Ben. I'm sure she doesn't hate you."

"Oh? So, you mean, that's not a snarl I see on her face every time she looks at me?"

Erin laughed. A quick exhale of a silly grunt. That faded into a deep sigh. "Yes, that probably is what you see. But she doesn't hate you."

Ben slowly sipped his coffee, swallowed, then lifted his eyes, tilted his head, and said, "Okay. Let's cut to the chase. Erin...tell me about Christina McIntyre."
